Liverpool Port Restructures As Strike Starts

News

Liverpool port workers started their second walk out yesterday, with the week long strike due to continue until 17th October 2022.

However, hostilities between Peel Ports, the port’s owners, and the Unite union have been further exasperated following a recent announcement that the port is restructuring.

The operator has announced that it will be starting a redundancy consultation process this week, which is due to the downturn in volume through the port.

A Peel Ports spokesperson commented: “We are exploring a number of different options to try and protect as many jobs as possible, including redeploying staff in other areas of the business”.

Industry experts are forecasting that the recent downturn in global container volumes is likely to get worse before it gets better, but the union see this as an action of revenge for the strike action.
