US Import Ban from Uyghur Could Affect UK Exports

Air Freight, News, Sea Freight

The US are implementing an import ban from the Xinjiang Uyghur region of China in June, which could impact exports from the UK to the United States.

The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act was passed in December but becomes effective from 21st June 2022. It states that any goods mined, produced, manufactured, wholly or in part, in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) will not be allowed into the United States.

We understand that this also includes goods imported from other countries that have materials sourced from the region. Therefore, we recommend that exporters to the USA, whether from the UK or another origin Country, check whether their supply chains may be affected.

The ban is being managed by the CBP (US Customs and Border Protection) and there are exceptions if products meet certain criteria. The CBP provide more information on the ruling HERE.

President Biden is understood to have signed off on the act due to forced labor being commonplace in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous region and reports of further human rights issues.
